LUCY GRANT CHOSEN FOR ELITE ALL-GIRLS BASEBALL
TEAM BOUND FOR COOPERSTOWN
(Springfield, MA) Baseball For All (BFA) has chosen Lucy Grant of Bethel, Connecticut as a member of the Sparks, an international, elite, all-girls 12U baseball team that will compete against 103 boys’ teams at Cooperstown Dreams Park in Cooperstown, New York on July 20-27, 2012. This marks the tenth consecutive season the Sparks have competed at Dreams Park.
Grant currently plays for the Bethel 11U All Star Travel Baseball Team in Bethel, Connecticut. According to statistics provided by a former member of the coaching staff, last year she led the team with a Batting Average of .361, 26 RBI’s, and an average of .421 with runners in scoring position. Over Memorial Day weekend this year, she led the Bethel 11’s to the Championship Game by going 9 for 13 for an average of .692 with 5 RBI’s, including a game-winning RBI in extra innings during the semi-final game. Grant just completed the sixth grade at Bethel Middle School, where she made honors and high honors. Last year she was also awarded the prestigious Presidential Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence.
In 2003, the Sparks became the first all-girls baseball team to ever compete in what was traditionally considered a “boys” event. The team was the brainchild of BFA founder and executive director Justine Siegal, a former college and professional baseball coach. Last spring, she became the first female to throw batting practice in several major league baseball spring training camps. Throughout their eight year history, the Sparks have drawn top 12U female baseball players from the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Hong Kong and Indonesia! Three players from the Sparks have also gone on to play for USA Baseball’s National Women’s Team.
BFA is a 501©3, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to providing meaningful instruction and opportunities in baseball, especially for girls.
